San Antonio, Texas is home to a variety of neighborhoods and historical landmarks. Some of these areas include the King William District, Olmos Park, Government Hill, Monte Vista Historic District, Highland Park and many more. However one neighborhood that has hardly ever been mentioned is Far North Central which is located between IH-10 and US 281 in South San Antonio.
A low-crime area home to diverse residents, the Far North Central neighborhood is in a prime location for commuters and families alike.
Unlike its more urban neighbors to the south like the Southtown district or Port San Antonio, Far North Central is one of San Antonio’s most naturally beautiful areas. It has three parks, two creeks, and even easy access to San Antonio Riverwalk that runs along Blanco Rd. And the majority of homes are well kept up despite being built between 1970 and 1985!
Three major roads serve as main arteries through this neighborhood: Wurzbach Parkway which runs north/south; HWY 281 which runs north/south; and Fredericksburg Rd., another north/south road that becomes Hwy. 16 in Bexar county.
Far North Central is home to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio which employs over 4,000 workers and has a large influence on local health care options. Far North Central’s largest school district is North East ISD that serves nearly 32,000 students in a wide range of public and private institutions including high-ranking Clark HS (and new Elementary campus).
Popular with the commuters heading into north central San Antonio or even out to Hill Country businesses like Comfort or Kerrville are these neighborhoods excellent location! The neighborhood community center was renovated and reopened as ‘The Point’ in February 2013; it features a pool, fitness room, lab and more. The area also has three parks and two neighborhood pools.
The area has easy access to I-10 and the Far North Central neighborhood is very bike friendly with nice wide streets and sidewalks. Far North Central is an excellent family neighborhood!
Crime in this neighborhood consists of a mixture of property crimes like theft from cars, home burglaries, and vandalism with a low level of violent crime that is typically limited to low-level assaults (and some domestic violence).
Far North Central’s low costs of living are attractive to young professionals, families, and retirees alike. The area is also home to a large number of Hispanic residents but the neighborhood feels very integrated with a diverse range of races and ethnicities.
And one of Far North Central’s main draws is its affordability as compared to the rest of San Antonio but also when compared to suburbs like Hill Country Village or Stone Oak. Homes here can go for about $40 – $70/sq ft!
Some of the main issues facing Far North Central include some drainage problems that lead to street flooding during heavy rains as well as expected construction on Hwy 281 likely making traffic detours for locals over the next year or so.
The neighborhood has undergone steady population growth since 2000 (largely due to new people moving in). It is highly sought after by many first time home buyers thanks to it high affordability rating (aside from areas like Monte Vista). This is one San neighborhood that you definitely need to check out!
Additionally, many of Bexar county’s most popular and high-income hospitals are in North Central including the world famous University Hospital system as well as Methodist, Baptist, and the Children’s Hospitals.
